WIRELESS, BROADBAND MORE PROMINENT AT CES CONVENTION
Broadband, wireless and govt. regulation will continue to take more prominent role at CES Jan. 8-12 at Las Vegas Convention Center. Organizer, CEA, is predicting about 100 federal and state govt. officials will attend or speak at convention, making it what it says will be largest govt. contingent ever to attend nongovt. trade show. Digital rights management, HDTV and other consumer technologies remain important.
Although schedules remain fluid, more than dozen federal legislators are expected to attend convention, with majority of them expected to participate in congressional panel at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 10. Most of govt. officials also are expected at invitation-only dinner at Bellagio same night. Among lawmakers expected at convention are Sen. Ensign (R-Nev.) and Reps. Barton (R-Tex.), Berkley (R-Nev.), Clay (D-Mo.), Davis (R-Va.), Doolittle (R-Cal.), Gillmor (R-O.), Issa (R-Cal.), Pastor (D- Ariz.), Ramstad (R-Minn.), Reyes (D-Tex.), Thompson (D-Miss.), Weller (R-Ill.).
Details aren’t final on FCC panel scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 9, but FCC Chmn. Powell is likely to do one-on-one interview with CEA Pres. Gary Shapiro. FCC Comrs. Adelstein and Martin, as well as NTIA Dir. Nancy Victory, are expected to attend convention, but don’t have scheduled speeches. Other govt. attendees are expected to include FTC Comrs. Sheila Anthony and Mozelle Thompson, Commerce Dept. Undersecy.-Technology Benjamin Wu, and Commerce Dept. Undersecy.-Intellectual Property Edward Rogan.
