Trump Says All Car Parts Will Be US Origin

President Donald Trump answered a question about auto tariffs for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, as the two stood in the Oval Office May 30.

"He's going to end up building his whole car here. All the manufacturers will build their parts here, too," Trump said.

He said he gave automakers "a little leeway" to import parts without higher costs, but in two years, that will phase out.

"They make a part in Canada, a part in Mexico, a part in Europe, nobody knew what was happening. I think it's ridiculous," he said.
