Canada Issues Customs Verification Priority Areas

The Canada Border Services Agency recently issued a list of compliance and verification “priorities” for imported goods to alert traders about where it’s focusing its inspection and enforcement efforts.

The agency said it's focusing on verifying the classification of certain imported frozen desserts, making sure the correct duties are being applied to vaping products, and scrutinizing import origin verifications under trade agreements with the EU and the U.K. It’s also prioritizing verifications and inspections involving imports of electric vehicles and steel and aluminum from China, along with steel and aluminum and motor vehicles from the U.S.

CBSA also is looking to make sure imports of certain gloves, bags, spent fowl, freezers, washers and dryers, LED lamps, furniture and bicycle parts are correctly classified. It also said certain American manufacturers have been shipping bedding and drapery to Canada and claim they qualify for duty relief under USMCA when they actually include inputs from countries outside the USMCA territories.
