Apple and Meta Make Case for New Class of 6 GHz Devices
Apple and Meta Platforms asked the FCC to move forward on a new geofenced variable power device class with geofencing restrictions in the 6 GHz band. The geofenced devices would be able to operate at higher power levels than other very-low-power devices (see 2506160018).
The devices are “likely to predominately be wearable technologies (e.g., smartwatches and Augmented Reality glasses),” the companies said in a filing posted Monday in docket 18-295. When used for applications such as augmented reality, “these devices would have significant latency and throughput requirements,” they said. “Because they are expected to be wearable,” the devices would also "face substantial signal attenuation in communicating across users’ bodies.”
